Heart disease is the leading cause of death worldwide, largely due to the heart's poor ability to regenerate muscle tissue. nDiabetes reduces circulating stem/progenitor cells involved in hematopoiesis, immune surveillance and homeostasis of surrounding tissues. This alteration can be attributed to microangiopathy, neuropathy, fat deposition and inflammation in the bone marrow, a previously overlooked site of diabetic end-organ damage.

As a result, diabetes impairs stem/progenitor cell mobilization and availability, which in turn predicts adverse outcome and death.

Clinical use and costs of all anticancer drugs have steadily increased along with rising incidence. Novel treatments such as targeted therapy and immunotherapy account for almost two-thirds of all anti-cancer drugs in Taiwan.

Since the use and cost of targeted therapy and immunotherapy have increased significantly in Taiwan, approaches to improve the quality of cancer care while reducing the economic impact of new therapeutic drugs should be carefully considered.
